Lightning strikes pose a significant threat and are one of the most serious and often overlooked causes of damage to buildings and their contents. At its worst a lightning strike can be fatal.
The majority of residential blocks in the UK will have a lightning protection system installed, but a significant number of these are not having the annual inspection and certification carried out.
Key points:
➤ It is the duty holder/building manager’s responsibility to maintain compliance of their building’s lightning protection systems
➤ Insurance companies will also require lightning protection systems to be inspected and maintained
➤ Fire inspections require certified lightning protection
➤ BS EN6235 states that systems should be inspected at intervals not exceeding 12 months.
